Tax extension: what it covers, what it does not, and how to get one
A federal tax extension gives individuals six more months to file, moving the tax year 2026 deadline from Thursday, April 15, 2027 to Friday, October 15, 2027.
Last day to request a 2027 extension: Thursday, April 15, 2027.
Extended filing deadline: Friday, October 15, 2027.
Tax extension form: Form 4868 (or an electronic payment marked as an extension).
A tax extension does not extend the time to pay. The IRS states plainly that the extension is to file only; tax you owe must be estimated and paid by the April deadline (IRS).
The IRS accepts three methods, and each one gives the same six extra months.
No. Requesting a tax extension is free and carries no penalty of its own.
