> The tax filing deadline 2027 is Thursday, April 15, 2027: tax year 2026 federal returns must be filed and any tax owed paid by that day. Tax season, when the IRS starts accepting and processing those returns, usually opens in late January; the 2027 opening date is not yet announced. An extension pushes only the filing date to Friday, October 15, 2027; the payment date stays April 15.

## Key facts

- 2026 return filing and payment due: Thursday, April 15, 2027
- Extended filing deadline: Friday, October 15, 2027
- Q4 2026 estimated tax payment: Friday, January 15, 2027
- Minimum late-filing penalty (return over 60 days late): $525 or 100% of tax owed, if less
- 2027 filing season opening date: Not yet announced (usually late January)

## When is the tax deadline in 2027?

The tax filing deadline 2027 for individual federal returns is **Thursday, April 15, 2027**. That is the due date for your tax year 2026 Form 1040 and for paying any balance on it. The IRS rule is that April 15 moves to the next business day only when it lands on a weekend or legal holiday, and in 2027 it does neither ([IRS, When to file](https://www.irs.gov/filing/individuals/when-to-file)). Tax season, when the IRS starts accepting and processing these returns, usually opens in late January; the 2027 opening date is not yet announced, and the IRS usually announces it in early January.

A tax deadline is the last day a return or payment is treated as on time. Miss the filing date and a late-filing penalty can start; miss the payment date and a late-payment penalty plus interest start. The two dates are the same in April, but they separate once you request an extension.

## Tax due date 2027: the full calendar for people who owe

Most people only think about April, but anyone who owes a balance or pays estimated tax has six federal dates in the 2027 calendar year. The table below lists each one, what is due, and what goes wrong if you miss it.

| Date | What is due | If you miss it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Friday, January 15, 2027 | Fourth-quarter 2026 estimated tax payment | Estimated tax penalty may apply on Form 2210 |
| Thursday, April 15, 2027 | 2026 return, balance due, extension request, first-quarter 2027 estimated payment | Late-filing and late-payment penalties, plus interest |
| Tuesday, June 15, 2027 | Second-quarter 2027 estimated payment; automatic date for filers living abroad | Estimated tax penalty; interest from April 15 for abroad filers |
| Wednesday, September 15, 2027 | Third-quarter 2027 estimated payment | Estimated tax penalty |
| Friday, October 15, 2027 | Extended 2026 returns | Late-filing penalty starts if tax is owed |
| Tuesday, January 18, 2028 | Fourth-quarter 2027 estimated payment (see note below) | Estimated tax penalty |

2027 federal tax dates for individuals who owe

Estimated tax is paid in four installments due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 of the next year, and a payment due on a weekend or legal holiday is on time the next business day ([IRS, Estimated tax FAQs](https://www.irs.gov/faqs/estimated-tax/individuals/individuals-2)). January 15, 2028 is a Saturday and Monday, January 17, 2028 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is how we arrive at January 18. Confirm that date on the 2027 Form 1040-ES when the IRS releases it.

Missing an installment is covered in our [estimated tax penalty](https://backtaxesdesk.com/penalties-interest/estimated-tax-penalty) guide, including the under-$1,000 and 90% or 100% safe harbors.

## When are taxes due in 2027 if you file an extension?

Taxes are still due April 15, 2027 even with an extension. An extension moves only the return due date, to October 15, 2027; the IRS expects you to estimate what you owe and pay it by the April date ([IRS, Get an extension](https://www.irs.gov/filing/get-an-extension-to-file-your-tax-return)).

You can get the extension three ways: pay electronically and mark the payment as an extension payment, use IRS Free File (open to all incomes for extensions), or file Form 4868. Our [Form 4868 walkthrough](https://backtaxesdesk.com/tax-extensions/form-4868-tax-extension) covers the form line by line, and the [tax extension deadline 2027](https://backtaxesdesk.com/tax-extensions/tax-extension-deadline-2027) page covers the October date and the abroad and disaster-area exceptions.

> **An extension is not free time on the balance:** Any tax unpaid after April 15, 2027 builds interest, compounded daily, and usually a 0.5% monthly late-payment penalty, even though the return itself is not late until October 15.

## What if I can't pay by April 15, 2027?

If you cannot pay by April 15, 2027, file the return on time anyway and apply for a payment plan. Filing on time avoids the larger late-filing penalty, and the IRS offers two main plans ([IRS, Payment plans](https://www.irs.gov/payments/payment-plans-installment-agreements)):

- **Short-term plan:** up to 180 days to pay, for combined tax, penalties and interest under $100,000, with no setup fee.
- **Long-term plan (installment agreement):** monthly payments, available online to individuals who owe $50,000 or less. Setup fees run from $29 (online, direct debit) to $178 (phone, mail or in person, non-debit).
- **Lower penalty on a plan:** once you have filed on time and have an approved plan, the late-payment penalty drops from 0.5% to 0.25% a month.

Pay whatever you can with the return, because penalties and interest are figured on the unpaid part only. The steps to apply are in [how to set up an IRS payment plan](https://backtaxesdesk.com/payment-plans/set-up-irs-payment-plan), and the wider picture for this season is in [owe taxes in 2027](https://backtaxesdesk.com/back-taxes/owe-taxes-2027).

## Tax return deadline 2027: what it costs to file or pay late

Missing the tax return deadline in 2027 costs 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month the return is late, up to 25%. Paying late costs 0.5% a month, also capped at 25%, and when both apply in the same month the late-filing charge is reduced by the late-payment charge ([IRS, Failure to file penalty](https://www.irs.gov/payments/failure-to-file-penalty); [IRS, Failure to pay penalty](https://www.irs.gov/payments/failure-to-pay-penalty)).

### The 60-day minimum penalty

A tax year 2026 return filed more than 60 days after April 15, 2027 (so after Monday, June 14, 2027) without an extension faces a minimum late-filing penalty of $525 or 100% of the tax owed, whichever is less. That figure applies to returns due after December 31, 2025.

### Worked example: owe $4,000, file on time, pay in July

Say your 2026 return shows $4,000 due. You file on April 15, 2027 but pay the full amount on July 14, 2027, three months later. The late-payment penalty is 0.5% x 3 months x $4,000 = **$60**. Interest is added on top at the quarterly underpayment rate.

The rate is 7% for October to December 2026; the January to March 2027 rate is not yet announced and usually comes out in late November. As a projection only, if the rate stayed at 7%, three months of interest on $4,000 would be about $70 (7% x 91/365 x $4,000, before daily compounding). Current rates are tracked on our [IRS interest rate 2027](https://backtaxesdesk.com/penalties-interest/irs-interest-rate-2027) page.

## Older years with an April 15, 2027 cutoff

April 15, 2027 is also a refund cutoff for some older returns. To claim a refund you generally must file within three years of the return's due date ([IRS, Time you can claim a credit or refund](https://www.irs.gov/filing/time-you-can-claim-a-credit-or-refund)). Tax year 2023 returns were due April 15, 2024, so an unfiled 2023 return that would produce a refund generally has to be filed by April 15, 2027 or the refund is lost.

There is no cutoff in the other direction: if you owe on an old return, the IRS can still assess and collect it. Filing sooner stops the late-filing penalty from growing. See [how to file old tax returns](https://backtaxesdesk.com/unfiled-returns/file-old-tax-returns) for getting missing W-2 and 1099 data.

## 2027 figures not yet announced

As of September 19, 2026, several numbers people plan around have not been published. Do not rely on any site that states them as final.

- **Filing season opening date:** not yet announced; the season usually opens in late January, and the IRS usually announces the date in early January.
- **January to March 2027 underpayment interest rate:** not yet announced; normally released in late November 2026.
- **2027 seriously delinquent tax debt threshold for passports:** not yet announced; it was $66,000 for 2026 and usually appears with the annual inflation adjustments in October or November.
- **Mandatory electronic payment date:** checks and money orders are still accepted; the IRS expects any electronic-only requirement to start in 2027 or later, with no exact date published.

## Common questions

### Is April 15, 2027 a weekday?

Yes. April 15, 2027 is a Thursday, so the federal filing and payment deadline for tax year 2026 returns stays on April 15 with no weekend shift.

### Is the tax deadline 2027 extended for everyone?

No. There is no general postponement for 2027. Only taxpayers in IRS-declared disaster areas get automatic postponements, and the new dates are set disaster by disaster.

### When does tax season 2027 start?

Tax season 2027 starts when the IRS opens the filing season and begins accepting and processing tax year 2026 returns, usually in late January. The 2027 opening date is not yet announced; the IRS usually announces it in early January. You can prepare your return before then, but e-filed returns are not processed until the season opens.

### What happens if I file on time but pay late in 2027?

You avoid the 5% monthly late-filing penalty and pay only the 0.5% monthly late-payment penalty plus interest on the unpaid amount. The penalty drops to 0.25% a month once an IRS payment plan is approved.

### Is the state tax deadline also April 15, 2027?

Many states use April 15, but not all, and some require their own extension request. Check your state revenue department for its 2027 date.

### When is the last day to mail a 2026 tax return?

A paper return postmarked by April 15, 2027 is on time. If you have an extension, the postmark deadline is October 15, 2027.
